As with color scales, GIA’s clarity grading system was developed because jewelers used potentially misleading terms such as “loupe clean” and “piqué.” Nowadays, terms such as VVS1 and SI2 should be used even if the jeweler speaks a language other than English (such as Japanese or French), such as when buying a diamond abroad.
